The Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly University of Pune), since its foundation in 1949, has been one of the premier institutions of higher learning and research in India. With a picturesque campus sprawling over 400 acres of area, the University is a state university and one of the best universities in India, with jurisdiction over the districts of Pune, Nashik and Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. The University is not only one of the favoured educational destinations among students from different parts of India, but also draws international students from various parts of the globe. There are 11 faculties, 53 teaching and research departments on campus. Besides that there are 943 colleges and institutes and 194 research centres affiliated to the University.
The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) earned a place of distinction in the UK-based Times Higher Education World Rankings 2015-16, where it was placed 3rd among Indian universities Universities and between 601 and 800 among universities worldwide. In 2017, the university has been ranked at joint second position among the conventional Indian universities.
The University has been reaccredited with A+ grade in the year 2017 with a CGPA of 3.60 by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission (UGC). This is the highest CGPA achieved by any university in the state of Maharashtra.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has ranked the University at 10th position amongst Indian universities. In the overall ranking of all the higher education institutions in India, the University has been placed at 18th position. The university is the only state university in Maharashtra among the top 100 universities in India.
The Savitribai Phule Pune University has been actively involved in the internationalisation of higher education through its participation in several collaborative programmes with leading national and international universities and institutes. Since its inception, the aim of the University has been to achieve a high level of excellence in academics and research. The University not only aims at providing educational opportunities of global standards, but also fostering cross-cultural understanding among students.

The International Centre of Savitribai Phule Pune University has earned the highly coveted British Standards Institution (UK) ISO 9001: 2015 Certification in 2016. It is one of the leading international centres of its kind, hosting 40% of the international student population from almost 103 countries.
The International Youth Festival, organized by the International Centre every year, is a wonderful endeavour towards creating a global student community. Prof. Vijay Khare

As Director of the International Centre, Savitribai Phule Pune University (Formerly University of Pune) Dr. Vijay Khare provides excellent leadership to all international engagements. He is a Professor& Head in the Department of Defence& Strategic Studies, at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). He holds M.Sc. Degree in First Class and has been awarded Ph. D. Degree in Defence & Strategic Studies. Dr. Khare was awarded the Post Doctoral Fellow by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for his work based on Non-military threats to South Asia. He is a well known expert in the areas of national security, non-traditional security, terrorism and counter terrorism, peace and conflict resolution and human rights.
Dr. Khare holds a number of Administrative and Governance positions including serving as Chairman of the Board of Defence & Strategic Studies. In addition, he is serving as Director; University Grants Commission (UGC) sponsored Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Studies Centre. He is the co-ordinator of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Chair, SPPU. He is a member of the Academic Council and a member of the Standing Committee, SPPU. He is a member of the Working Group on Higher Education Planning Commission, Government of India. He is also a life member of various professional organizations in India. He is the Chief Editor for the International Journal for Social Sciences and Global Security. He is a recipient of a number of honours and awards. A number of books have been published to his credit and research projects completed.
